Summer is sadly on its way out, but Chicago’s event calendar certainly does not seem to reflect that. Chicago has a lot of month-long events like Meet Me on The Mile & Chicago in Tune. Here are some non-recurring last-minute Chicago summer events that you would be sad to miss:

Pitchfork Music Festival:

This would not be an exciting Chicago event list had the Pitchfork Music Festival not made it. On September 10-12th at Union Park, see artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief, St. Vincent, Angel Olsen & Flying Lotus. The sun is still warm, beer is still flowing, and food vendors are still serving delicious food. So enjoy some good music and the last summer days at the Pitchfork Music Festival.

Roscoe Village Burger Fest:

Quick question, who does not love a good burger? Take a bite out of some drool-inducing burgers these last summer days at the Roscoe Village Burger Fest. Over the weekend of September 3rd-5th, have fun listening to live bands, partake in some arts & crafts, and taste test some burgers!

Hyde Park Jazz Festival:

Feeling the jazz vibes? Visit Hyde Park over the weekend of September 25th-26th for the Hyde Park Jazz Festival! Hear the city come alive with the beautiful genre of jazz.

Wright Plus Architectural Housewalk:

Are you a big fan of architecture and real estate? For just one day, visitors can tour several different buildings designed by the late Frank Lloyd Wright. Visit the marvels of Frank Lloyd Wright on Saturday, September 18th. 

Sam Adams’ Lakeview Taco Fest:

You should be sold by simply reading this event’s title! Beer and tacos? Yes, please! That sounds like the perfect last-minute summer event for me. So come to Southport Corridor September 18th-19th and take in some of the last nights of summer with tacos, beer, margaritas, and more at Sam Adam’s Lakeview Taco Fest.

¡Súbelo!:

Are you feeling the urge to jump into the Latinx culture? First, check out the Pilsen neighborhood for ¡Súbelo! Then, enjoy food from local restaurants and varying vendors at Harrison Park on September 4th.

Global Peace Picnic:

Do you want to celebrate World Peace Day surrounded by others in your community? If you nodded enthusiastically, this event is perfect. On Saturday, September 25th, the Humboldt Park Boat House hosts a Global Peace Picnic filled with musical performances.

• BeerHopTacular – November 4 at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios. This is Chicago’s original craft beer festival with food, competitions, and 150 craft beers to sample.

This Lakeview neighborhood tradition celebrating its 21st consecutive year this year is generally the kick-off to street festival season in the city. 2. Polish Parade

The Chicago Polish Parade, which celebrates the Polish Constitution of 1791 in honor of the first democratic constitution in Europe, is celebrating its 126th year this May. Polish history, traditions, and values will be on display. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the Polish Heritage May 6th. The parade runs down Columbus Dr starting at 11:30.

3. Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest

This great street festival is in its 33rd year and is one of the best community events. The festival features a ton of great food, drinks, and crafts made by local artisans. Come out and enjoy two days of music on two different stages right off the Belmont Redline stop. The festival runs May 27th through May 28th.

4. Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festivities

No one needs reminding of when this great celebration occurs. Come out and enjoy live music, delicious food and drink, and of course take part in some of the wonderful arts and crafts activities available. The celebration occurs in the Little Village part of town. This parade and its festivities are a great way to learn more about Mexican culture and it is always a lot of fun!

5. Bike the Drive

Do you love riding bikes? Do you love the scenery of Lake Shore Dr? Bike the drive is a great event for you is you enjoy either of those! On Sunday May 28th participants can bike down Lake Shore Dr from Bryn Mawr all the way to the Museum of Science and Industry and back during five hours of car-free riding!

6. Chicago Beer Classic

On May 6th recover from your Cinco de Mayo celebration by sampling the best beer that Chicago and the Midwest area can provide. Attendees receive 48 2 oz samples of beer and are able to cast their vote for their favorite beer. The event takes place on the Soldier Field/Museum campus.

7. Kids and Kites Festival

8. Lincoln Park Wine Fest

9. Memorial Day Parade

On May 27th, after a wreath is laid at the eternal flame in Daley Plaza, one of the oldest and largest Memorial Day parades in the country will kick-off. The parade runs down State Street from Lake to Van Buren. This event is great for a group outing or a family. It has been a city tradition since 1870.

10. Anime Central 

The largest anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture convention reconvenes for its 19th year Frday May 19th through Sunday May 21st. There are a number of workshops, dances, educational panels and so much more! Come see it for yourself at the Donald E Stephens convention center.

Baconfest – April 1

Bacon lovers can sample creative bacon dishes from some of the best chefs in Chicago, as well as cocktails, beer and wine designed to complement the meals. Shows and workshops take place at two venues within walking distance of each other: Stage 773 off W. Belmont Ave and the Athenaeum Theatre off N. Shamrock Shuffle 8K – April 2

Work off all that indulging at Baconfest by signing up for Bank of America’s Shamrock Shuffle. Participants of this 8K through Grant Park receive a T-shirt, a medal, and access to the post-race party featuring live music and refreshments. Entry fees range from $50 to $55 depending on when you register for the race. Shamrock Shuffle’s website recommends attendees use public transportation or, if driving, allow for congestion and street closures on race day. International Quilt Festival – April 6-8

Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) – April 21-23

This pop culture convention offers fans of comics, movies, television, anime, video games and more a weekend of entertainment in downtown Chicago. C2E2 hosts panels and screenings from these industries, as well as areas on the show floor dedicated to artists, designers, fashion, collectibles, and crafts. C2E2 is held in the South Building at McCormick Place off S. Lake Shore Drive. Passes range from $30-$70 for regular admission, while VIP passes run from $125 to $400. The Greek Independence Day Parade, or Hellenic Heritage Parade, commemorates the 197th Anniversary of Greek Declaration of Independence. The free parade begins at 2:30 pm at Halsted and Randolph St. in Greektown.

Head down to the United Center on Wednesday, March 22nd to watch the Bulls play their division rival Detroit Pistons at 7:00pm. The Bulls then face-off against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, March 24th at 7:00pm. Last but not least, LeBron James and the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers will be in town on Thursday, March 30th at 7:00pm.

“Neighborhoods of the World” Events

A collection of family-friendly celebrations to be presented at Navy Pier, the “Neighborhoods of the World” events are a great way to explore various cultures.

The series will begin with a China-centered event on February 12th, 2017. After that, the celebrations will be held weekly on Saturdays through the final event on March 26th. Each Saturday will focus on a different country and feature live music, traditional dancing, cultural cuisine, and crafts from around the world.

Handmade Market at The Empty Bottle

The local Handmade Market is a fun way to spend an afternoon. The February 2017 market will be held on the 11th at The Empty Bottle. It will feature the work of a number of local artists and craftspeople, all of which will be available for purchase.

While many people won’t be able to attend this adorable market without making a purchase, it can make for a free fun day out if you are able to use self-control. (Then again, what fun is that?)

Polar Adventure Days

Looking for some outdoor fun? You might want to look into the Polar Adventure Days offered by the Parks and Recreation Department.

The February Polar Adventure Day will be held on February 25th, 2017. The event is a winter exploration of the new Northerly Island Natural Area. It includes encounters with live animals, winter-themed craft projects, and free hot chocolate. This is the perfect event for kids of all ages!

Zoolights

ZooLights at the Lincoln Park Zoo is fun for the whole family, adults as well as children. It’s a spectacle for the eyes, and the hot cocoa is a delight to the tongue. Winter WonderFest

The Goodman Theatre hopes you have a Dickens of a good Christmas, and has two plays to make sure you enjoy the holiday season. A Christmas Carol is playing in the Albert Theatre, the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his redemption as he rediscovers the meaning of Christmas. A Christmas Carol runs from November 19 to December 31. Twist Your Dickens at the Owen Theatre is a warped comedy reworking of Dickens’ beloved tale, best suitable for audiences age 16 and up due to mature language and content. “This twisted take on Charles Dickens’ classic skewers Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and pop culture’s most beloved holiday specials.” Twist Your Dickens runs from December 2 to December 30.

Christkindlmarket

A Christkindlmarket is a German tradition, featuring unique shopping opportunities, traditional German food, beer and Glühwein (hot spiced wine) for the adults, and hot apple cider and hot cocoa for the youngsters. Chicago’s Christkindlmarket is at Daley Plaza until Saturday, December 24. Strudel, cookies, candy, cheese, sausage — you’ll find plenty to tempt your appetite. Enjoy the live music and sing along with the carols. If you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping yet, you’ll find a wide variety of gifts to buy.

Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is worth visiting any time of year, with such exhibits as the U-505 submarine, the Colleen Moore Fairy Castle, and the model trains, but right now is an especially good time to visit. The Christmas Around the World exhibit at the museum of Science and Industry celebrates many different Christmas traditions, with 50 trees and exhibits to show off holiday traditions from around the world.  Dancers and musicians will demonstrate customs and cultural activities from Ecuador, Norway, Ireland, Bulgaria, Mexico, Scotland, Austria, Lithuania, Greece, and other countries. The exhibit continues until January 2, 2017.

Chi-Town Rising

Chi-Town Rising, Chicago’s largest outdoor celebration, returns for its second year on Saturday, December 31, 2016. Greet the new year with fireworks at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on East Wacker Drive. The event is free, but please do register; tickets are required to gain access to the viewing areas. It’s an all-day event. At 9:00 that morning is the Chi-Town Rise and Shine 5K Race and Fun Run at Millennium Park. That afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 is the Family Countdown Celebration at Wrigley Square in Millennium Park. The theme is Around the World for New Year’s Eve, making it both fun and educational, and admission is free. The star of the show, if you’ll forgive the pun, is the Chi-Town Rising New Year’s Eve Celebration, from 8:00 pm Saturday night to 12:30 am Sunday morning. Enjoy the fireworks, watch the star ascend the west tower of the hotel, and eat and drink with friends old and new.

Midnight Circus in the Parks is an event that runs from September 10th to October 16th. This is an eclectic group of eccentrics, aerialists, and acrobats performing at various parks all over Chicago for this Big Top event. Riot Fest Music Festival runs from September 16th to 18th this year and features music, food, fun, and great local beers. It’s located at Douglas Park in Chicago and will have both well known artists like Morrissey and The Misfits performing on the stage, as well as underground and local artists. Taco Fest returns on September 17th and 18th in Lake View, a Chicago suburb. Taco Fest invites local area restaurants to put their best taco forward with their own personal twists on this Mexican favorite. Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day is a one-day music festival on Saturday September 24th at US Cellular Field featuring a plethora of hip hop and rap artists from all over the country including EDM heavyweight Skrillex, R&B singer John Legend and Odd Future Head Honcho Tyler the Creator. ACTIVATE: with the help of local artists and deejays, the Chicago Loop Alliance throws a party in a nondescript alley each month. It’s a roving event that takes on a new theme. This summer the theme is celebrating each of the five senses. September’s event takes place on the 15th and is free to attend. You can RSVP to receive a free drink when you arrive as well.
